Garnet - January's birthstone brings intense brilliance and warmth

Garnet, the birthstone for those born in January, represents truth, faithfulness, commitment and regeneration.

Garnet’s rich red and warm tones make it popular in antique as well as modern jewelry. The word garnet is derived from a Latin term for seed or grain, which indicates the most common shape of garnets that are mined. Garnets are actually a family of 7 types gemstones that have similar chemical make up. The most common color of garnets in popular jewelry is a brilliant red, which can rival the rich and intense hues of some rubies.

Below are some images of the gemstone.

Garnets can be found in a variety of colors other than red, such as green, orange, yellow, and brown. Garnets have been used in jewelry for ages and can be found in jewelry from early Egyptian, Greek and Roman times. Today the majority of garnets are mined in Africa, Sri Lanka and India. The garnet gemstone is rather hard, with a rating of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. That compares to a diamond’s rating of 10. The hardness of garnets make it a good choice for jewelry worn daily because of its resistance to wear.

Over the years, we have custom made many gorgeous pendants and rings out of many different colors of garnet. They are a very durable semi-precious gem with vibrant color and offer a lot of opportunity to create a beautiful custom made piece of jewelry.
