How lucky you are to be born in July. Your birthstone is a natural phenomenon of red beauty.
Rubies are a member of the corundum mineral species, which also includes sapphires. Ruby is also the gem for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversary. Rubies can have the highest per-carat price of all colored gemstones. Rubies are mined in Thailand, India, Afghanistan and Tanzania. Myanmar’s legendary valley of rubies is the source of many of the world’s most fabulous gems. In ancient Sanskrit, rubies are called ratnaraj which means "king of precious stones."
Rubies are a very durable and a long lasting gemstone, having a Mohs hardness of 9.0. For this reason, we love to work with rubies in our custom jewelry. Rubies are cut in all shapes and can be used as a center stone or we can use small rubies as accent stones. Rubies are graded in regards to the cut, color, clarity and carat weight or size. This grading is much like diamond grading and the variations of these 4 Cs can be dramatic when picking a ruby. Rubies can come in a very light red and can also be found in what is called pigeon blood red, a deep and dark color.
Here are some of the ruby jewelry pieces we have created over the years at Richard Dolgin Private Jeweler.
