Two Beautiful Birthstones for October Birthdays

October, with the coming of Fall and its many colors is the perfect time to buy your loved one an opal or tourmaline gemstone.

Here is an example of the colors of Fall portrayed in a necklace called "The Path of Enlightenment" . The necklace contains 180 magnificent opals from Lightning Ridge, Australia, a famous opal producing area. - Courtesy Cody Opal and GIA.

Opals have much interesting lore about them. Romans held opals in high esteem as the most precious of gems since it contains the colors of all other gemstones. Bedouins thought opals contained lightning itself captured after falling from the skies during storms. Most fine opals come from Australia and from one particular place called the Lightening Ridge Mine. Opal mining can be very dangerous. The most common type of opals that are found abundantly are the white opals that have a mix of white, blue and red hues. Black opals are more rare and can have as many as ten colors in one stone. These colors can be mesmerizing with flickers that resemble lighting.

Opals are one of my top three favorite gemstones. The problem with opals is that they are extremely fragile and need to be worn with care. Also over time, some opals can craze, meaning they develop a large section of cracks that resembles a spiderweb. This is due to a loss of moisture that occurs over a long period of time. Opal is one of my favorite gemstones, even with its shortcomings. If you decide to buy an opal you must also be prepared to care for it properly and probably not wear it on a daily basis.

Tourmaline is also an excellent choice for an October birthstone. Tourmaline comes in many shades of green, pink, paraiba (blue or green tint), and red. Many times tourmaline will have green and red within the same stone, which is called watermelon tourmaline. We have made many spectacular pieces using tourmaline over the years. With the many shapes and colors available it is an excellent choice to use in a custom jewelry project.  Tourmaline usually comes from Brasil, Africa, Russia, Madagascar and Myanmar.

I just purchased a beautiful pink trillion cut tourmaline weighing 1.33 carat, mined in Madagascar and cut and polished in Thailand. It is an exquisite stone just waiting to be set in a beautiful piece of jewelry.
