January's Vibrant Birthstone Shines In Many Colors

If your loved one was born in January, a beautiful garnet should be in their future.

Garnets are a collection of related minerals creating a set of gemstones that come in many colors. Garnet come in a wide variety of colors in from red (rhodolite garnet), green (tsavorite), orange (spessartite), orange-brown (hessonite), purple (pyrope), blue and even black. These variable gemstones usually have a translucent or transparent appearance.  There are even color changing garnets that appear to be different colors in natural versus incandescent light. Amazing purple pyrope-almandine garnets were discovered in Mozambique in 2016. These unique gems have a pleasing purple-pink hue. Red garnets are common and have widespread use in jewelry.

Many ancient societies valued and used garnets in jewelry for royalty. Using garnets in prized jewelry dates back more than 5,000 years. A stylish red garnet bead necklace was found in an Egyptian tomb dating back to 3800 B.C. Garnet necklaces were created for pharaohs and buried in their tombs as valuable items for the afterlife. In ancient Rome garnets adorned signet rings used with wax stamps to seal important documents. In the Middle Ages garnets were favored gemstones in items worn by clergy and noblemen.

At Richard Dolgin Private Jeweler we have crafted a stunning custom necklace featuring a rhodolite garnet and pink sapphire. We first found a beautiful rhodolite garnet with a rich burgundy red color, with lighter reds illuminating through the stone. Then Marsha went to work doing her designing magic and designed a necklace that highlights this gorgeous gemstone. The trilliant rhodolite garnet is set in beautiful palladium. Like a comet on the opposite end of the pendant we used a stunning trilliant pink sapphire. This beautiful pendant makes a wonderful fashion statement and will become an heirloom piece of jewelry in some luck lady's jewelry collection.

Another garnet we have worked with extensively is the spessartite garnet. The gorgeous orange color reminds me of a beautiful sunrise. We have made a beautiful pendant featuring an oval starburst cut spessartite garnet encircled with top quality diamonds and a diamond bale. The sides of the pendant have gorgeous filigree detail.  To match this beautiful pendant we have assembled a stunning pair of pear shaped spessartite earrings surrounded by diamonds. These spessartite earrings are set with Euro backs so they dangle from the ear. These earrings also have exquisite filigree detail around the earring. This set would make a spectacular gift to warm up a January evening.

At Richard Dolgin Private Jeweler we also have acquired a collection of antique and estate jewelry featuring beautiful garnets. Some of these pieces are well over 100 years old and have been restored in our jewelry studio.

Garnets have something for everyone. From different shapes to all the colors of the rainbow you can be selective to the garnet of your choice. We would love to create a custom piece of jewelry for you using a beautiful garnet that will become a family heirloom piece of jewelry.
