The vibrant green of peridot is reminiscent of the beautiful green of leaves in a forest. The different hues can be breathtaking and its natural beauty contributes to any piece of jewelry.
The beautiful peridot is August's birthstone. Peridot is also the gemstone used to celebrate the 15th wedding anniversary. Peridot is created in some of the most extreme environments. Peridot are mined from deep in the earth's mantle, in lava and even meteorites. Peridot comes in a range of beautiful hues of yellow green to a deep olive green. They are mined from some lava flows in United States, China, and Vietnam and are even rarely found in pockets of solidified molten rock in Finland, Pakistan, Myanmar, and the island of Zabargad.
Ancient Egyptians mined peridot in the island of the red sea and referred to gem as the 'gem of the sun'. Some believed that it protected its owner from “terrors of the night,” especially when it was set in gold. People in medieval times often confused peridot with emerald. For centuries, people believed the fabulous 200-ct. gems decorating the shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Germany’s Cologne Cathedral were emeralds. They are actually peridot.
There is a big difference between commercial quality peridot and a true gem quality peridot. A gem quality peridot has a true, unique spark and radiance that is truly mesmerizing. They are hard to find and can be more expensive than the more commercial grades. Peridot wears well in jewelry but over time can abrade.
