Earring back types explained by Richard Dolgin Private Jewelry. Learn the difference between friction versus screw versus security or guardian earring backs.
The security back is what I recommend most frequently. Even though they are slightly more expensive, my customers like the peace of mind knowing that their earring will not fall out. These backs are easier to use and more comfortable than the screw backs while being more secure than friction backs.
When I do use friction backs, I buy high quality die struck backs that should last a lifetime. They are the least expensive back. I commonly replace them for clients though. They are the least secure option I offer. One big advantage is that they are available in multiple sizes which is especially helpful for my older clients. My mom was able to put on and take off her earrings well into her 90s because of their larger size.
I can order in these backs if a client has lost one but never suggest them. They cost about as much as the security backs but are cumbersome to get on and off. Why would someone want to take 2 minutes every day screwing on the back. The security back is just as safe without the hassle.
